Brendan’s Alternate Tagline for Last Hope Island:
I mean, it was a lot more than just one island.
Quick synopsis:
The story of the refugee governments who went to England to fight on during World War II.
Fact for Non-History People:
Polish fighter pilots kicked all sorts of ass. Remember that before you make a Polish joke next time.
Fact for History Nerds:
After scientists were evacuated to England with heavy water (needed to make a nuclear bomb), the water was stored with the Crown Jewels.
My Take on Last Hope Island:
There are a lot of books written on World War II every year. It may seem like overkill even for something as important as the second war to end all wars. Then you read a book like Last Hope Island and realize how many stories still have not been told fully.
Lynne Olson writes a book about many people who would be overlooked in a traditional narrative of World War II. Poland is usually a footnote after the country is taken over by Nazis. Norway may hardly be mentioned at all. Both of these countries have amazing stories which could spawn dozens of books.
No book on World War II would be complete without documenting how many British politicians were complete pains to work with, often being haughty and refusing to listen to others. I know, snooty British people? Shocking.
On the other hand, you have the Earl of Suffolk who defused bombs. I guess it all balances out.
Verdict:
A great read about people who usually only get a line or two in other books on World War II. Buy it here!
