Brendan’s Alternate Tagline for Hero of Two Worlds:
Parisians definitely have made a habit of rioting.
Quick synopsis:
A biography of the Marquis de Lafayette. They keep writing them and I am going to keep reading them.
Fun Fact Non-History People Will Like:
Good job, Hartford, Connecticut. When Lafayette and his family were trying to escape, well almost everyone in Europe, Hartford was the only place in the U.S. which had granted the Marquis and his whole family citizenship. Most other places in the U.S. only granted it to the Marquis.
Fun Fact for History Nerds:
Lafayette is buried with dirt from Bunker Hill on top of him.
My Take on Hero of Two Worlds:
If you have read this site at all then you already know plenty about the Marquis Lafayette, aka, the Hero of Two Worlds. You’re welcome, nerds.
What do I have to say about this book then? Quite a lot!
Duncan’s writing is very to follow, and he does not bog down his writing with extensive diatribes. When recapping the American or French Revolutions, authors can often try and become overly poetic or try to glean brand new insight which may or may not hold up to scrutiny.
Duncan tells the biography of Lafayette in a straightforward manner which reads more like a novel than a scholarly treatise. This isn’t to say his work isn’t scholarly. Much of what Duncan writes is backed up by primary sources and other scholars. He just writes it in more plain language.
Verdict:
This is the most accessible book on Lafayette that I have read. Even non-nerds will like it! Buy it here!
