The Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read (Max)

Brendan’s Alternate Tagline for The Body in the Snow:

I still don’t know how I’d vote.

Quick synopsis:

The first trial of Karen Read for the murder of her boyfriend, Boston PD Officer John O’Keefe.

Fact for Non-History People:

Regularly, dozens to hundreds of people would stand outside the courthouse during the trial to either cheer for or against Read.

Fact for History Nerds:

Eyewitness misidentification is the leading cause of wrongful convictions.

My Take on The Body in the Snow:

Luckily for Karen Read, you can’t be convicted of unlikability. Here are the basics. In 2022, Karen Read and her longtime boyfriend Boston PD Office John O’Keefe left a bar to go to a friend’s house in the middle of the blizzard. The next day, John was found dead in the front yard of the friend’s house. Almost everything I can tell you from here is conjecture.

And there is so much to tell. Shady police work, unprofessional detectives, and Karen’s own personality make this case a total quagmire. I have watched enough true crime to know that you should always suspect the significant other unless you have concrete evidence why not. This documentary (which, to be fair, is put together by Karen and her team and is not impartial) highlights so much reasonable doubt that your head will spin. At the end, I didn’t necessarily think Karen was set up, but I also didn’t know that I could convict her if I was a juror. That makes for a great watch in my book.

Verdict:

Definitely worth a watch. Watch it here!
